I believe that design should reflect personality. I rely heavily on listening to my clients needs. Then I bring options to a design that allow for personal choice all the while expanding my clients knowledge about the design process and its possibilities. Our personal goal in all of our projects is to build long-term relationships and trust with our clients. This is the essence of Bespoke Design Ltd.
My favorite style has its roots in tradition, but is brought together in a cleaned up contemporary environment with tailored choices that have just enough detail to be amazingly interesting and personal. In many ways it is a style that brings sparkle and soft touches to a clean design aesthetic.
One of the simplest things I enjoy doing is changing a color scheme, as it is such a simple way to make an instant and dramatic change in ones environment. Over the past years, my interpretation of how light and surroundings effect color has become honed, as has my knowledge of the psychology of color. I have always enjoyed space planning to better accommodate the needs of a client and their living environment, while at the same time updating a look and opening the client up to new creative possibilities that they feel comfortable living within.
My interest in colour and design began while working at Walls Alive in Calgary, one of Calgary's premier design houses. My formal education took me to Ontario, where, while working at Prodecor in Ottawa and course work at Rittins Studio in Toronto, I continued to enhance my knowledge of coatings, wallpaper and colour. At that time great emphasis was placed on the art of faux finishes. Practical application experience included participating in the restoration of the historical Casa Loma in Toronto.
Upon completing my Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree, I returned to Calgary, and working at Walls Alive, developed and ran an education series on faux finishing techniques in a hands-on environment.
My interest in faux finishing and entrepreneurship culminated in building a successful faux finishing business called the Faux Zone, installing finishes for many of Calgary's top designers and builders. Being exposed to high-end interior design projects in the booming Calgary renovation and new-build market enhanced my interest in the entire design process, and the possibilities of embracing old spaces with new life. In 2003, I formed Thomas Benjamin Brannen Interior Design (TBBI) and offered a full custom and comprehensive design service to my clients. TBBI's focus was on quality renovations and new construction, covering all aspects, from initial space-plan development, furniture design and fabric selection, colour and paint choice, to final staging, all with paramount emphasis on the creation and building of quality on-going relationships with my clients.
My experience in colour, coatings, textiles and superior client service simultaneously brought me the opportunity to be part owner in Maria Tomas, a premier home furnishings boutique in Calgary, where I introduced and managed the prestigious Farrow and Ball paint and wallpaper line from England, practiced design and enhanced my knowledge of quality furniture construction and textiles, while bringing much growth and direction to the business overall. Looking for warmer climates, I became co-owner and Principal Designer with Bespoke Design Ltd in 2008 and in 2012 became its sole proprietor.
I am a firm believer in life-long education and consider sharing the skills I have learned as my "Thank You" for those generous people who have shared their knowledge and skills with me. I have taught courses and volunteered on panels through Chinook Learning Services, Bow Valley College and Mount Royal College in Calgary, and the Pacific Design Academy in Victoria.
It would be my pleasure to guide, educate and help you fulfill your design aspirations, whether it be simply exploring new colour possibilities in coatings or textiles or a complete comprehensive re-design of your living environment.
